Common Questions about Christian Financial Planning

We get a lot of the same questions from families and business owners exploring Christian financial planning for the first time. Here are the ones that come up most. If you don't see your question, just ask — we're an open book.
Do you only work with Christians?

No. We work with business owners, families, and individuals of many backgrounds. If you want biblical stewardship integrated into your plan, we’re built for that. If you don’t, we’ll still help you build a values-based strategy rooted in wisdom, clarity, and practical planning.

Who do you typically work with?

Most of our clients are business owners who want personal and business planning aligned; families who want a coordinated plan (not disconnected advice); and people nearing retirement who want confidence around taxes, income, and next steps.

What’s the difference between Sound Wealth and Sound Tax?

Sound Wealth focuses on financial planning and investment management. Sound Tax provides tax planning and tax preparation, with options ranging from single-year filing to proactive year-round planning.

Do I have to use both Sound Wealth and Sound Tax?

No. Some clients work with just one. Many choose both because it creates a more coordinated experience, with planning and taxes working together.

What's the first step if I want to work with you?

We'll learn your story, what you want help with, and what you've tried so far. Then we'll outline the next best step — whether that's planning, investments, taxes, business support, or a combination. It's a discovery call, not a sales pitch.

What does your planning process look like?

We start by listening — you share where you are, where you want to go, and what matters most. Then we build a plan around your real life: family, business, taxes, goals. Once it's in place, we help you implement it and stay with you as things change. You won't be left alone to figure it out.

What does financial planning include?

Your plan covers the things that actually keep people up at night: cash flow, retirement readiness, tax-smart decisions, insurance and risk, investment alignment, estate and legacy coordination, and giving strategy. Everything connects in one plan — not five disconnected conversations with five different people.

How does investment management work at Sound Wealth?

If it's a fit, we provide ongoing investment management built to support your financial plan. Portfolios are evidence-based, tax-efficient, and built with low-cost funds that keep more of your returns working for you. Your investments aren't managed in isolation — they're connected to your tax strategy, your cash flow, and your long-term goals.

Do you offer values-based or faith-based investing?

Yes — if you want it. We offer biblically responsible investing (BRI) options that screen companies based on faith-aligned criteria. But it's never forced. Some clients want every dollar aligned with their convictions. Others prefer a traditional evidence-based approach. Either way, the portfolio is built around your goals, your risk tolerance, and your values — whatever those look like.

What credentials does Matt Reakus hold?

Matt Reakus holds four credentials: CFP® (Certified Financial Planner), CKA® (Certified Kingdom Advisor), CEPA (Certified Exit Planning Advisor), and Enrolled Agent (EA) licensed to represent clients before the IRS. Together, they cover financial planning, investment management, tax strategy, and business exit planning — the four disciplines most often needed together. The CKA® specifically is the recognized standard for advisors integrating biblical stewardship into their practice.

Can you help business owners beyond investments?

Yes. Business owners usually need more than investment management — they need tax strategy, cash flow clarity, bookkeeping oversight, and decision guidance that connects business priorities to personal goals. That's where our outsourced CFO model and Sound Tax come in. One team seeing the whole picture instead of three advisors who never talk to each other.

How does Sound Wealth charge for financial planning and investment management?

Financial planning starts at $7,650 as a flat fee, adjusted based on complexity and scope. Investment management is charged as a percentage of assets under management — the full fee schedule is disclosed in our Form ADV Part 2A brochure. For clients managing $1M+ in assets with us, comprehensive financial planning is typically bundled into the investment management relationship. We're fee-only: no commissions, no product sales, no hidden charges. Exact pricing is confirmed during your discovery call before any commitment.

What does Sound Tax cost?

Sound Tax pricing varies by scope, but current starting points include individual tax returns starting at $750; business returns starting at $2,000; and comprehensive annual tax planning with a monthly retainer starting at $1,000. For clients managing $2M+ in assets with Sound Wealth, tax preparation fees are discounted. Pricing is confirmed after understanding complexity.

Do you work with clients outside New Jersey?

Yes. We're headquartered in Marlton, New Jersey, but we work with families and business owners across the country. Most of our meetings happen over video, and our process works just as well virtually as it does in person. We're registered as an investment advisor in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Texas, and serve clients nationwide for financial planning and tax services.

Can you coordinate with my existing CPA or attorney?

Yes. We regularly collaborate with clients' existing tax professionals, estate attorneys, and insurance specialists. If you'd prefer to keep those relationships and have Sound Wealth handle planning and investments, we'll coordinate with your current team. If you'd prefer an integrated approach, our Sound Tax practice can bring tax preparation and planning in-house alongside your financial plan.

How is working with a Christian financial advisor different from a regular financial advisor?

The technical work is the same — portfolio construction, tax coordination, cash flow strategy, retirement planning — all done to the same professional standards as any qualified advisor. What's different is how we approach conversations about purpose, generosity, and legacy. For clients who want it, biblical stewardship is built into the planning framework from the start. For clients who don't, we still deliver rigorous, values-based planning rooted in wisdom and integrity.

How are your fees different from a typical financial advisor?

We're fee-only, which means we charge a transparent advisory fee and never earn commissions on products we recommend. Many advisors are compensated through commissions on insurance, mutual funds, or annuities, which creates conflicts of interest. Our fee model is simple: flat-fee planning or a percentage of assets under management. You see the number, and there are no surprises.

Do you have a minimum account size or net worth requirement?

No hard minimum. Financial planning engagements start at $7,650 and are adjusted based on complexity and scope. Ongoing investment management is offered on a percentage-of-assets fee schedule outlined in our Form ADV Part 2A. For clients with $1 million or more in managed assets, comprehensive financial planning is typically included in the investment management relationship. At $2 million or more, we also apply a discount to Sound Tax preparation fees. The starting point for any engagement is a discovery call.

Are you a fiduciary?

Yes. Sound Wealth is a fee-only, state-registered Investment Adviser, which means we're legally required to put your interests ahead of ours at all times. We don't earn commissions, don't sell products, and don't have incentive conflicts with your financial decisions. Fiduciary duty is the foundation of how we work.

What is a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA®)?

The CKA® (Certified Kingdom Advisor®) is a professional designation administered by Kingdom Advisors. It requires an existing financial credential (such as the CFP®), completion of a 20-module education program on biblical financial principles, ongoing continuing education, and a commitment to integrating faith and financial practice. It's recognized as the standard credential for Christian financial professionals.
